Relational Aesthetics PDF
By:Nicolas Bourriaud
Published on 2002 by

Where does our current obsession for interactivity stem from? After the consumer society and the communication era, does art still contribute to the emergence of a rational society? Nicolas Bourriaud attempts to renew our approach toward contemporary art by getting as close as possible to the artists' works, and by revealing the principles that structure their thoughts: an aesthetic of the inter-human, of the encounter; of proximity, of resisting social formatting. The aim of his essay is to produce the tools to enable us to understand the evolution of today's art. We meet Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Louis Althusser, Rirkrit Tiravanija or FĂ©lix Guattari, along with most of today's practising creative artists.

Truth about a Publisher PDF
By:Stanley Unwin
Published on 2008-12 by Faber & Faber

Sir Stanley Unwin's best-known book was The Truth About Publishing. It was first published in 1926 and held sway as a sort of vade-mecum of the trade for decades afterwards. However as Sir Stanley admits in his preface to this book, inspired by Arnold Bennett's Truth About an Author, the book he first wanted to write was The Truth About a Publisher. In the end that had to wait, not being finally published until 1960. As the title suggests this is the autobiographical companion to the earlier work. It is a full and successful story: from the creation of George Allen and Unwin ('my life work' as Sir Stanley describes it) to his crucial work for the Publishers Association, the International Publishers Association and the British Council. The book is full of fascinating stories of authors, publishers and books in the first half of the twentieth-century.

Lost Savannah PDF Download

Lost Savannah PDF
By:Luciana M. Spracher
Published on 2003-03 by Arcadia Publishing

Since its founding over 250 years ago, Savannah, Georgia has become a historic preservation gold mine, exhibiting a variety of architectural styles. However, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area experienced heavy economic growth, during which numerous buildings were demolished regardless of age or condition to make way for newer and supposedly better structures. The community lost many important landmarks, architectural masterpieces, and a piece of its history. Lost Savannah takes a close look at these vanished buildings to document their existence and role in Savannah's past. Drawing on collections of the Georgia Historical Society, a rich presentation of Savannah's public, private, and commercial architecture has been brought together in this unique photographic volume. Through vintage images, one can see the city's development and growth as well as its subsequent decay prior to the preservation movement. Lost Savannah examines individual buildings, such as Union Station and the Bulloch-Habersham House, as well as the evolution of Savannah's architectural landscape, including West Broad Street and Elbert Square.

Creswell Photographs Re-examined PDF
By:Bernard O'Kane
Published on 2009 by American Univ in Cairo Press

The Creswell photographic archive at the American University in Cairo(AUC) is an invaluable resource of over 12,000 printed images of Islamic architecture, mainly in Cairo, but also including buildings in other important cities such as Cordoba and Baghdad. Creswell's own photographs constitutethe majority of the collection, but he also assembled work by photographers active in the decades before he began his systematic recording in the 1920s. The AUC archive is unique because it includes the work of other photographers as well as Creswell images unavailable elsewhere, some recording buildings that no longer exist. This volume of collected studies seeks to highlight the value of this collection for scholars, who can examine the visualevidence of architecture now destroyed or altered in order to better understand various aspects of these significant buildings. Contributors discuss such issues as epigraphy in domestic and religious architecture, employing early photographs as guides for modern restoration, and military architecture.

Carmel PDF
By:Kent Seavey
Published on 2007 by Arcadia Publishing

Carmel is a microcosm of California's architectural heritage, sited at one of the most scenic meetings of land and sea in the world. Mission San Carlos Borromeo became a root building for California's first regional building style, the Mission Revival. |Carmel City,| as it was called in the 1880s, was marketed as a seaside resort for Catholics. Its pine-studded sand dunes survived the imposition of a standard American gridiron street pattern, with a Western, false-front main street, to become |Carmel-by-the-Sea.| Artists, academics, and writers embraced the arts-and-crafts aesthetic of handcrafted homes built from native materials, informally sited in the landscape. In the mid-1920s, Tudor Revival and Spanish Romantic Revival styles enhanced the storybook quality of the community. Carmel's architectural character is primarily the product of working builders. Its design traditions have been interpreted and modified for modern times by noted architects, building designers, and craftsmen. Individual expression continues as an ongoing aesthetic theme.

Constructing Worlds PDF
By:Alona Pardo,Elias Redstone,David Campany
Published on 2014 by Prestel Pub

The relationship between architecture and photography is the focus of this book that features the work of eighteen influential artists, from the 1930s to the present day. Architecture has long been a subject matter for photographers, who utilize the medium not just to document the built world, but also to reveal wider truths about society. This book features chapters devoted to various artists--among them, Berenice Abbott, Walker Evans, Ed Ruscha, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Andreas Gursky and Iwan Baan--and includes 220 color and duotone images. Each chapter opens with a text introducing the artists' work, followed by reproductions of their photographs. Arranged chronologically, the book documents the birth of the skyscraper against the backdrop of the Great Depression; the rise of the modernist tradition in America, post-colonial Africa, and India; the effects of industry on 1960s Europe; the increasing suburbanization of America and Europe; and the consequences of today's mass urbanization in Asia, the Middle East, and South America. Far-reaching and penetrating, this volume reflects on the ongoing dialogue between photography and architecture.

History of Modern Art PDF
By:H. Harvard Arnason,Daniel Wheeler
Published on 1986 by Prentice Hall

Comprehensive and insightful, History of Modern Art: Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Photography is the definitive source of information on the art of the modern era. This Fourth Edition is a freshly retold story of the art and artists of the last 150 years from modernism's mid-nineteenth-century European beginnings to today's divergent art trends. In the decade that has passed since the publication of the previous edition, art historians have come to recognize that works of art, whether sublimely beautiful or provocatively repelling, are artistic responses made by individuals to life in the real world. In her thoughtful reworking of H. H. Arnason's classic text, Marla Prather poses critical questions -- Why did Cubist painters and sculptors refract their subject matter in the way they did? Why did Abstract Expressionism take hold in America? Why did Postmodern architects reject the clean lines of the International Style? What does it mean that artworks of the late 1990s defy categorization? -- and provides insightful and thought-provoking answers. Almost 500 of the nearly 1,500 illustrations are new to this edition, a reflection of Prather's thorough rethinking and updating of the content. The final section of the book presents thirty-seven artists representative of today's decentralized art scene who are working in mediums ranging from conventional painting and photography to video and performance art. With its fully revised bibliography, History of Modern Art, Fourth Edition, is an essential volume for anyone with a curiosity about modern art and culture. Book jacket.
