The Confidence Game PDF
By:Maria Konnikova
Published on 2016-01-12 by Penguin

|It’s a startling and disconcerting read that should make you think twice every time a friend of a friend offers you the opportunity of a lifetime.” —Erik Larson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dead Wake and bestselling author of Devil in the White City Think you can’t get conned? Think again. The New York Times bestselling author of Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes explains how to spot the con before they spot you. “[An] excellent study of Con Artists, stories & the human need to believe” –Neil Gaiman, via Twitter A compelling investigation into the minds, motives, and methods of con artists—and the people who fall for their cons over and over again. While cheats and swindlers may be a dime a dozen, true conmen—the Bernie Madoffs, the Jim Bakkers, the Lance Armstrongs—are elegant, outsized personalities, artists of persuasion and exploiters of trust. How do they do it? Why are they successful? And what keeps us falling for it, over and over again? These are the questions that journalist and psychologist Maria Konnikova tackles in her mesmerizing new book. From multimillion-dollar Ponzi schemes to small-time frauds, Konnikova pulls together a selection of fascinating stories to demonstrate what all cons share in common, drawing on scientific, dramatic, and psychological perspectives. Insightful and gripping, the book brings readers into the world of the con, examining the relationship between artist and victim. The Confidence Game asks not only why we believe con artists, but also examines the very act of believing and how our sense of truth can be manipulated by those around us. Experimental Psychology PDF
By:Frank J. McGuigan
Published on 1997 by Pearson College Division

This edition continues to emphasize tha mutual facilitation of pure and applied research and the wise application of effective research methods to benefit society. Strategies for the solution of societal problems are specially developed in Chapters 10 and 11. Psychology is going through changes and is in danger of losing the methodological sophistication that has propelled it to the forefront of social and biological sciences. Psychologists are leaders in business, industry, government, politics, and academia, and their research findings on topics inportant for the public are cited daily in the media. However, that preeminence may erode as many psychologists neglect the study and use of sound research methodology. This book has always attempted to develop a broad perspective about where sound psychological research fits within areas of public interest as well as more generally within science. On this point some instructors whose students might be more interested in quasi-experimental research than in experimental research could assign Chapter 11 early in the course, perhaps immediately after Chapter 6, which introduces experiments.

Book Man's Search for Meaning PDF Free

Man's Search for Meaning PDF
By:Viktor E. Frankl
Published on 2006-06-01 by Beacon Press

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory-known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos (|meaning|)-holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful. At the time of Frankl's death in 1997, Man's Search for Meaning had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey for the Library of Congress that asked readers to name a |book that made a difference in your life| found Man's Search for Meaning among the ten most influential books in America.

An Unquiet Mind PDF
By:Kay Redfield Jamison
Published on 2009-01-21 by Vintage

WITH A NEW PREFACE BY THE AUTHOR In her bestselling classic, An Unquiet Mind, Kay Redfield Jamison changed the way we think about moods and madness. Dr. Jamison is one of the foremost authorities on manic-depressive (bipolar) illness; she has also experienced it firsthand. For even while she was pursuing her career in academic medicine, Jamison found herself succumbing to the same exhilarating highs and catastrophic depressions that afflicted many of her patients, as her disorder launched her into ruinous spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempted suicide. Here Jamison examines bipolar illness from the dual perspectives of the healer and the healed, revealing both its terrors and the cruel allure that at times prompted her to resist taking medication. An Unquiet Mind is a memoir of enormous candor, vividness, and wisdom—a deeply powerful book that has both transformed and saved lives. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The Angry Man and the Weaver PDF
By:Alexander Mescavage,Eunice Taylor
Published on 2014-12-03 by AuthorHouse

A wonderful re-telling of the Odyssey ! It is is captivating and culturally in tune. As the story unfolds the characters come alive bringing readers their worlds. The parallel narrations of Weaver and Angry Man create an empowering dynamic that keeps the reader hanging on to every last adventure. The bond that grows between the two is both captivating and heartbreaking as the gods play them as human pawns. A vividly written and entertaining piece that is a magnificent read. Genevieve Baranuk MSW- Lead Eating Disorder Therapist at the Recovery Village in Umitilla, Florida. This isnt the Odyssey you were forced to read in school! In their second novel, Alexander Mescavage and Eunice Taylor Beauchman offer a steamy and realistic reincarnation of one of the worlds first great works of literature. It shows life as it was in the Bronze Age; gritty, predatory, and full of wonder. Life is cheap. Capricious gods roam the earth and forcing their will upon mankind. The writers breathe life into the old classic and make it rip-roaring modern fiction at its very best! The yarn is visionary and yet true to the Iliad and the Odyssey. The authors have thoroughly studied Homers epics and Mycenaen Plays and have melded them into a comprehensive story between the myths. At the same time, they update the legend with searing archeological and historical exploration. The Word Politics and secrets of the Bronze Age are explored in detail and become terrifying portends of todays world. The reader is struck with how similar and yet how different the ancient people were. The Angry Man and the Weaver: Re-imagining the Odyssey is a thrilling, captivating, and a cant-put-down read. Beauchman and Mescavage easily enchant readers with their story, drawing them in from the very beginning. From the first page of the book to the last of the epilogue, the authors and characters bring readers directly into their world, packing the novel rich with education, excitement, and enjoyment.

The Autobiography of God PDF
By:Julius Lester
Published on 2005-12-27 by St. Martin's Press

Rebecca Nachman is a Rabbi without a synagogue. Having resigned from her dwindling congregation, she now works as a college counselor at a small Vermont college advising students about private matters and offering the |Jewish perspective| on issues raised at faculty dinner parties. Deeply lonely and on the edge of losing her faith, she comes into possession of a Torah, the last relic of Czechowa, a village of Polish Jews who were exterminated by the Nazis. With the Torah, the unquiet spirits of the village dead begin to visit Rebecca. On one visit they leave a manuscript written in Hebrew and titled My Life, an autobiography by God who, like any eager author, is seeking a sympathetic reader. No one has ever finished reading the manuscript, including Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, Maimonides, and Augustine. God thinks Rebecca will. Rebecca's life is further complicated when one of her advisees-a troubled young woman who seemed on the verge of confessing something-is found murdered. As the college struggles to comprehend the tragedy and a police investigation is launched, Rebecca begins reading, and so comes to confront the central challenge to her faith in His most troubling and unlikely incarnation. Julius Lester's first adult novel in more than a decade, The Autobiography of God marks the return of an utterly original and provocative voice in American letters, addressing religion with wicked humor and profound reverence.

Book Ethical Reasoning in the Mental Health Professions PDF Free

Ethical Reasoning in the Mental Health Professions PDF
By:Gary G. Ford
Published on 2000-09-19 by CRC Press

The ability to reason ethically is an extraordinarily important aspect of professionalism in any field. Indeed, the greatest challenge in ethical professional practice involves resolving the conflict that arises when the professional is required to choose between two competing ethical principles. Ethical Reasoning in the Mental Health Professions explores how to develop the ability to reason ethically in difficult situations. Other books merely present ethical and legal issues one at a time, along with case examples involving |right| and |wrong| answers. In dramatic contrast, Ethical Reasoning in the Mental Health Professions provides you with the needed background in methods of ethical reasoning and introduces an innovative nine-step model of ethical decision-making for resolving ethical dilemmas. Ethical Reasoning in the Mental Health Profession discusses the ethical codes of both psychology and counseling. This interdisciplinary approach promotes a better understanding of the similarities and differences in the points of emphasis in the two codes, which, in turn, enriches your understanding of the range of ethical considerations relevant to the practice of the mental health professions.
