Montage and the Metropolis PDF
By:Martino Stierli
Published on 2018-04-04 by Yale University Press

Montage has been hailed as one of the key structural principles of modernity, yet its importance to the history of modern thought about cities and their architecture has never been adequately explored. In this groundbreaking new work, Martino Stierli charts the history of montage in late 19th‑century urban and architectural contexts, its application by the early 20th‑century avant‑gardes, and its eventual appropriation in the postmodern period. With chapters focusing on photomontage, the film theories of Sergei Eisenstein, Mies van der Rohe's spatial experiments, and Rem Koolhaas's use of literary montage in his seminal manifesto Delirious New York (1978), Stierli demonstrates the centrality of montage in modern explorations of space, and in conceiving and representing the contemporary city. Beautifully illustrated, this interdisciplinary book looks at architecture, photography, film, literature, and visual culture, featuring works by artists and architects including Mies, Koolhaas, Paul Citroen, George Grosz, Hannah Höch, El Lissitzky, and Le Corbusier.

Snow White PDF
By:Hiroshi Sugimoto
Published on 2017-03-28 by

All of the photographs in Snow White are from his Theaters series and include many of his well known photographs of classic movie palaces and drive-ins, along with new photographs of Italian opera houses and abandoned theaters. Sugimoto began the Theaters series four decades ago. To make these images, he exposes the film inside the dark theater (or in the case of the drive-ins, outside at night) for the duration of the movie. The running movie is the only source of light bringing out the architectural details of these spaces. The Disney movie Snow White was running when Sugimoto photographed Palace Theater, Gary, 2013, one of the abandoned theaters that is reproduced here. In this book, Sugimoto reveals for the first time the movies that were screened when he took these photographs and the exposure time of each photograph. Each artwork in Snow White is accompanied by the name of the movie, the running time of the each, and a short text about each written by Sugimoto. The black and white photographs are hand-tipped onto the pages. The book is bound in silk cloth. Each book contains a numbered colophon signed by Sugimoto.

Learning from Las Vegas PDF
By:Robert Venturi,Denise Scott Brown,Steven Izenour
Published on 2017 by

Upon its publication by the MIT Press in 1972, Learning from Las Vegas was immediately influential and controversial. The authors made an argument that was revolutionary for its time -- that the billboards and casinos of Las Vegas were worthy of architectural attention -- and offered a challenge for contemporary architects obsessed with the heroic and monumental. The physical book itself, designed by MIT's iconic designer Muriel Cooper, was hailed as a masterpiece of modernist design, but the book's design struck the authors as too monumental for a text that praised the ugly and ordinary over the heroic and monumental. The MIT Press published a revised version in 1977 -- a modest paperback that the authors felt was more in keeping with the argument of the book -- and the original Cooper-designed book fell out of print and became a highly sought-after collectors' item; it now sells for thousands of dollars in the rare book market, while the author-redesigned paperback has remained continuously in print at a price affordable to students. Now, decades after the original hardcover edition sold out, the MIT Press is publishing a facsimile edition of the original large-format Cooper-designed edition of Learning from Las Vegas, complete with translucent glassine wrap. This edition also features a spirited preface by Denise Scott Brown, looking back on the creation of the book and explaining her and Robert Venturi's reservations about the original design. Learning from Las Vegas begins with the Las Vegas Strip and proceeds to |Ugly and Ordinary Architecture, or the Decorated Shed,| on symbolism in architecture and the iconography of urban sprawl. As Scott Brown says in her introduction, the book |upended sacred cows would not bad-mouth bad taste, and redefined architectural research.|.

Why Are We 'Artists'? PDF
By:Jessica Lack
Published on 2017-08-31 by Penguin UK

'Art is not a luxury. Art is a basic social need to which everyone has a right'. This extraordinary collection of 100 artists' manifestos from across the globe over the last 100 years brings together political activists, anti-colonialists, surrealists, socialists, nihilists and a host of other voices. From the Négritude movement in Europe, Africa and Martinique to Japan's Bikyoto, from Iraqi modernism to Australian cyberfeminism, they are by turns personal, political, utopian, angry, sublime and revolutionary. Some have not been published in English before; some were written in climates of censorship and brutality; some contain visions of a future still on the horizon. What unites them is the belief that art can change the world.

Life at the Dakota PDF
By:Stephen Birmingham
Published on 2015-12-01 by Open Road Media

A history of the Manhattan building and its famous tenants, from Lauren Bacall to John Lennon, by the New York Times–bestselling author of “Our Crowd”. When Singer sewing machine tycoon Edward Clark built a luxury apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in the late 1800s, it was derisively dubbed “the Dakota” for being as far from the center of the downtown action as its namesake territory on the nation’s western frontier. Despite its remote location, the quirky German Renaissance–style castle, with its intricate façade, peculiar interior design, and gargoyle guardians peering down on Central Park, was an immediate hit, particularly among the city’s well-heeled intellectuals and artists. Over the next century it would become home to an eclectic cast of celebrity residents—including Boris Karloff, Lauren Bacall, Leonard Bernstein, singer Roberta Flack (the Dakota’s first African-American resident), and John Lennon and Yoko Ono—who were charmed by its labyrinthine interior and secret passageways, its mysterious past, and its ghosts. Stephen Birmingham, author of the New York society classic “Our Crowd”, has written an engrossing history of the first hundred years of one of the most storied residential addresses in Manhattan and the legendary lives lived within its walls.

Street Life in London (1877-78), by journalist Adolphe Smith and photographer John Thomson, aimed to reveal by the innovative use of photography and essays the conditions of a life of poverty in London. Now regarded as a pioneering photo-text and a foundational work of socially conscious photography - |one of the most significant and far-reaching photobooks in the medium's history| (The Photobook: A History) - Street Life in London failed to achieve commercial success in its own time. In this groundbreaking book, we see the start, but not the conclusion, of a conversation between text and image in the service of education, reportage and social justice. Water and architecture PDF
By:Charles Willard Moore,Jane Lidz
Published on 1994-03-01 by Harry N. Abrams

The interplay of water and architecture has intrigued world-renowned architect Charles W. Moore and internationally acclaimed photographer Jane Lidz for decades. Their mutual interest has resulted in Water and Architecture, a collaboration of vibrant, poetic images and words in which the two reveal the expressive force of water, one of the most powerful and versatile of architectural elements. In his lively, insightful text, Moore first addresses the symbolism of water as a design element, then examines the specific uses of water in a wide spectrum of architectural structures - fountains and waterfalls, rivers and canals, lakes and pools, and oceans and island - concluding with a look at basic design principles and environmental issues. Following each chapter are Lidz's spectacular color photographs - 130 in all - which bring the sites and ideas discussed vividly to life. The inspirational beauty of these images captures the essence of each design. The scope of the book is impressive. The architecture ranges in style from classical to postmodern and includes places both celebrated and secret, from splendid palaces to humble plazas, waterfront skylines to private pools. Equally broad is the worldwide geographical span of the book: Bali, Belgium, China, England, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Spain, Thailand, and the United States are represented in Lidz's photographs. The text sections are accompanied by black-and-white documentary illustrations and architectural plans. A comprehensive list of the color photographs and an index round out this magnificent volume, which speaks not only to architects and designers but also to lovers of art, photography, gardens, and travel - to anyone whohas ever been enthralled by the mystical power of water.

Architecture in photography PDF
By:Paolo Rosselli
Published on 2001-11-19 by Skira - Berenice

This book is like a journey through the modern architecture of the 20th century and, at the same time, an aesthetic and conceptual reflection on photographic vision. Paolo Rosselli, one of the leading exponents of landscape photography in Italy since the early 1980s, has assembled in this volume the traces of a multi-form, antagonistic, problematic itinerary through some of the icons of the Modern Movement and an overview of the more advanced international contemporary architecture. The works of Aldo Rossi, Luigi Moretti, Le Corbusier, Rafael Moneo, Frank O Gehry, Santiago Caltrava, Frank Lloyd Wright, Herzog & De Meuron, Rem Koolhaas and others become an opportunity to reflect through photography on Modern spatiality in relation to the city, its profile, and its interior landscape. A difficult, often conflictual relationship exists between everyday life, the life of the man-on-the-street and Modern works. Problematically recounted through these images, this long visual reflection seeks to disrupt the fixed mind-set with which we have always looked at these 20th-century masterpieces. The volume follows a dual track, represented by the written commentary of Dennis Sharp and of the author, which intersects with the dense sequence of images mounted in an arrangement that constantly moves on and around the theme of architecture lost in the architecture lost in the contemporary metropolis. The photographs cover the time span of the past twenty years, from Paolo Rosselli's early Indian travels exploring Chandigarh up to his most recent architectural inquiries, revealing a gradual evolution in his photographic vision, and, more generally, the problematic course of contemporary photography.

Renaissance Architecture PDF

The Renaissance was a diverse phenomenon, marked by innovation and economic expansion, the rise of powerful rulers, religious reforms, and social change. Encompassing the entire continent, Renaissance Architecture examines the rich variety of buildings that emerged during these seminal centuries of European history. Although marked by the rise of powerful individuals, both patrons and architects, the Renaissance was equally a time of growing group identities and communities - and architecture provided the public face to these new identities . Religious reforms in northern Europe, spurred on by Martin Luther, rejected traditional church function and decoration, and proposed new models. Political ambitions required new buildings to satisfy court rituals. Territory, nature, and art intersected to shape new landscapes and building types. Classicism came to be the international language of an educated architect and an ambitious patron, drawing on the legacy of ancient Rome. Yet the richness of the medieval tradition continued to be used throughout Europe, often alongside classical buildings. Examining each of these areas by turn, this book offers a broad cultural history of the period as well as a completely new approach to the history of Renaissance architecture. The work of well-known architects such as Michelangelo and Andrea Palladio is examined alongside lesser known though no less innovative designers such as Juan Guas in Portugal and Benedikt Ried in Prague and Eastern Europe. Drawing on the latest research, it also covers more recent areas of interest such as the story of women as patrons and the emotional effect of Renaissance buildings, as well as the impact of architectural publications and travel on the emerging new architectural culture across Europe. As such, it provides a compelling introduction to the subject for all those interested in the history of architecture, society, and culture in the Renaissance, and European culture in general.
